Day 89, 3/30/2011

Permafrost is everywhere in the Interior. It can be a big problem for roads and structures when it begins to melt because places on the surface heave up and make the ground uneven.

These tubes strategically placed along Chena Hot Springs Road help to vent the warmth out of the ground to keep it frozen and hold damage to the road to a minimum. You can see these tubes all over the interior in various locations, such as the airport and next to the Trans-Alaska Pipeline.

Side trip - Anchorage, Alaska...

My duty station for the week. It's no Glacier Bay, but I suppose having Target and a mall close by is sort of nice. Not enough to make me EVER want to live here, though.
