Day 278, 10/5/2011

The People have spoken. Again.

A proposition to have the government regulate the Interior’s heating methods was previously put to a vote and died a resonant death, and yesterday, voters went to the polls and reiterated their wishes for the government to leave this one up to them.

Day 279, 10/6/2011

In Alaska, PFD stands for two things. Personal floatation device and Permanent Fund Dividend. Today, many Alaskan citizens became $1,174 richer.

Unfortunately despite the Sadler’s lady’s best efforts, most of our dividends will end up going into the heating fuel tank.

Day 280, 10/7/2011

The Fairbanks Ice Dogs’ home season opener was heaving to the gills with fans eager to see the game. The Tier II Junior A NAHL team are recent Robertson Cup champions.

Tonight they play the…Jackalopes???

Fif-ty fif-ty!

Fights break out ever so often at these games.

There are purists who much prefer the town’s other outstanding team, the University of Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks, to the Dogs, but I have to admit I much prefer this brand of blue collar style excitement. It’s sort of like comparing an Olympic wrestling match to the UFC octagon.

Day 284, 10/11/2011

A pretty sunset tonight.

We are losing around 7 minutes of daylight each day now.

Day 286, 10/13/2011

10/13/2011

Today I was very fortunate to be able to help out my old Park Service buddies and fly northeast of Fairbanks to the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve. Our mission was to locate as many wolf packs as possible via radio tracking. A couple of wolves in each pack are wearing collars with radio transmitters that send signals to a receiver that we carried in the plane. I used the receiver to scan for signals and then the pilot and I would try to locate where the signal was coming from by eliminating areas of land until the signal was strong enough that we could spot them from the plane.

We were successful in locating the wolves, however, with them and the plane both moving fast in different directions, I was never successful in getting a good photo of the animals, but here were a couple things that stayed still enough for me to get a good shot.

Here’s the back of Curtis’ (the pilot) head.

Here’s the area coming into the Preserve.

Here’s the runway at Cold Creek Camp, where we stopped to refuel and use the outhouse.

Here’s the (starting to get icy) Salcha River, which we followed back to Fairbanks since the way we came out this morning was closed due to snow and fog that had moved in on us.

Here’s me in my headset.

Here’s downtown North Pole.

Day 287, 10/14/2011

Today was a day for splitting and stacking wood.

We have a ways to go before we’re done with this chore.

Day 288, 10/15/2011

Halfway through October and our first sticking snow of the year (others have melted off).

Goodbye grass, see you in six months!

The view from the office today.

National Weather Service meteorologist Julie Malingowski observes and measures the last day’s precipitation.

Day 290, 10/17/2011

True to form, par for the course, and every other cliché you can think of, a little snow hits the roads and everyone forgets how to drive for a day.

Click here to see a 16 second video of fall and winter arriving to our street. It may have been time lapsed a tad, but it doesn't take much longer to actually get from summer to winter around here!

Day 298, 10/25/2011

Yuck! This is what happens when a warm chinook wind blows through the Interior and meltage occurs, a preview to break up!

Day 301, 10/28/2011

The morning flight to Anchorage leaves a vapor trail as the sun rises over Fairbanks and the Alaska Range.

Day 302, 10/29/2011

Finally, the night we wait for all year, our annual Halloween costume party!

We had quite a spread as usual, much of which was generously brought by our honored guests. Kayla’s little mice were almost too cute to eat.

The punch was almost too scary to drink!

Here’s Laura Ingalls, the winner for best kid’s costume.

The best female costume went to Wonder Woman, accompanied here by her good friend Supermom!

We had a surprise sweep for best male costume and best overall costume, both of which went to the Leprechaun, who was congratulated by his lovely gypsy wife.

I love Halloween!

Day 304, 10/31/2011

Trick or Treat!
Forgot to check the temps outside, but it had been just above zero all day. Warm by Interior standards for late October, so the kids were out in force.

Day 306, 11/2/2011

Today was the first day we noticed the pups doing the hotfoot dance outside. When it’s far enough below zero, walking across the yard for them is like walking in hot sand on the beach in bare feet.

So we got the booties down from the toybox, and Pumpkin donned them for the first time.

As you can see, he took to them like a duck to water, and they all had a great time playing in the snow with warm paws.
