Day 214, 8/2/2011

The Great Alaskan Bowl Company has generated a successful year round business out of taking deformed logs and branches like this one

and lathing them into unique and pretty wooden bowls.

The anomaly in the wood is created by insects and/or fungus and is quite prevalent here in the Interior. It makes for a nice round section of wood that’s big enough to carve a nesting set of large serving bowls, while regular slices of wood are used for smaller bowls.

Many buy them as gifts and art pieces to display. The Company can laser etch any photo you bring them into the bowl, and create a stand it can sit on that bears a greeting of your choosing. My favorite section of the store is the shelf where they keep the ones that have been hand adorned with lovely pictures by local artisans.
