Day 86, 3/27/2011

The sign outside the Daily News Miner newspaper building alerting you to the fact that you are on candid camera. (photo by Doug Montgomery)

The Denali State Bank building in downtown Fairbanks used to be St. Joseph’s Hospital. The photographer (Doug Montgomery) and many other lifelong Fairbanks residents were born there. It was converted to a bank in the mid 1980’s.

The Chena Marina float pond receives planes throughout the summer months, and snowmachiners play there in the winter. Many local pilots own land around the pond, and some live there full time. Notice the sign - I know a few pilots that have Labradors and other water dogs; I bet they have a heck of a time keeping them out of the float planes’ way! (photo by Doug Montgomery)

Good thing dinner is done! What happened in the last couple hours?! Oh well, that’s springtime in Alaska. (photo by Jennifer Bailey)

My colleague Lois put the harbinger of summer, her pink flamingo, out a little too early. Is there a theme of consternation recurring in these last few photos? (photo by Lois Dalle-Molle)

I want to enthusiastically thank all my friends who contributed photos from this weekend for rallying during my hiatus! Way to go guys!

Side Trip, Girdwood, Alaska...

Today Matt and I travelled with our friends Dana, Wyatt and Wade McGann from their home in Palmer to he Alyeska Ski Resort in Girdwood off Turnagain Arm.

Day 87, 3/28/2011

Could it be? Has spring finally sprung in Fairbanks? Don’t count on it…

The snow is beginning to melt on Fort Wainwright.

Day 89, 3/30/2011

Permafrost is everywhere in the Interior. It can be a big problem for roads and structures when it begins to melt because places on the surface heave up and make the ground uneven.

These tubes strategically placed along Chena Hot Springs Road help to vent the warmth out of the ground to keep it frozen and hold damage to the road to a minimum. You can see these tubes all over the interior in various locations, such as the airport and next to the Trans-Alaska Pipeline.

My duty station for the week. It's no Glacier Bay, but I suppose having Target and a mall close by is sort of nice. Not enough to make me EVER want to live here, though.

Day 90, 3/31/2011

Matt prepares a “Bacon Explosion” to share at work tomorrow.

Step 1: Make a lattice with bacon.

Step 2: Spread a layer of seasoned sausage over the bacon.

Step 3: Add the fillings.

Step 4: Roll into a log and smoke or bake the masterpiece of pork.

Sunrise outside my hotel window. The promise of a beautiful sunny Alaska day? Don't count on it...

Day 91, 4/1/2011

The many adaptations of the Bacon Explosion that were shared at the Moose Creek Range Complex on April Fool’s Day.

Everyone sampled them all, but unfortunately overindulgence led to communal commiseration and Alka-Seltzer later on.

A tip from the partakers… a little goes a long way!

I finished my PIO class and got my certificate this afternoon. I'm headed home! :)

Day 92, 4/2/2011

The calendar says it is April, but the Interior Alaska weather is recalcitrant. We woke up to single digits on the thermometer and fresh snow in the yard.

A night out at Silver Gulch with friends, and a toast to Charlie, who is soon to deploy to Afghanistan.

Godspeed Charlie, you and your soldiers will be in our thoughts and prayers. Don't worry about Jen and the kids. They have a strong support system here, as always.
